Meet Your Teachers
"What started as writing notes on pretty magazine pages in high school has since become one of my favorite ways to document those easily forgotten details that make up seasons of life. Art journals have been a safe place to test new ideas, reflect, list random details, and get a little poetic and I'm thrilled to get to share some of my favorite prompts and techniques with this class. "
xoxo, Rachel
"I've loved art journaling for the past 10 years. It's a wonderful 'just for me' hobby that I am looking forward to (finally) sharing with a group of students! Art journaling is my favorite therapy. Most of my journals focus on simple memories, hopes and dreams. There is also plenty of room for vulnerability on these books. Pages that explore doubts and fears have been a part of my personal growth through the years. I'm looking forward to six weeks of fun prompts, personal challenges and getting messy with pretty supplies while learning more about ourselves! Xo, Elsie"

Springfield Thrifting Is Usually Good Thrifting

The new D.A.V. sponsored thrift store called Red Racks had it's grand opening yesterday and I happened to have a spare hour so I took my chance and ran. Just kidding. I did, however, pull into a parking lot overrun with people from all social classes clamoring to get inside. I had to practice my patience with narrow aisles and distracted shoppers. I get it. Lots to look at.

I went to the housewares section first and found this beautiful, vintage, U.S.A. bowl in aqua. I could've walked out a happy woman but then I found the fantastic yellow-green melmac bowl, the trio of tulip cups, the hot pink insulated pitcher, and then...more vintage sheets. The same yellow vintage sheets that I passed up the day before. It was like I needed to take them home with me. Then, I come home late last night and realize all of the quilt kits had sold in the first thirty minutes of the update (THANK YOU!) and figured I could probably send those sheets off in pieces to a few more happy people. Sometime soon. I'll let you know well in advance.

And again, thank you for everyone that purchased a quilt kit or chalkboard. They sold out so quickly! There are so many beautiful pieces from this update so head over if you haven't had a chance.

Rachel

RVA Update Rescheduled

It's going to be a BIG one! Elsie is on her way to attend a wedding in Hawaii and is editing and getting things uploaded to the site like a mad woman. She'll be tweeting about it and posting on her blog the minute it goes live but is giving us an ETA of Thursday afternoon before 7pm CST. It'll be worth the wait! In the meantime, here is a little peek at another one of my pieces for the update.

I stopped by some mom and pop furniture shops on Commercial Street after dropping off the quilt kits at Elsie's house as a little treat for finally getting them finished and found a big trash bag of vintage sheets in one of them. I knew I needed a break when my first reaction was to cringe! Too many recent hours spent bent over a cutting board! If you're in town, they are at Alicia's (I think that's it) just a few blocks East of Grant and Commercial Street. They only take cash, though. The shop two doors down from it where I found my mid-century coffee and end tables had a rough looking dude manning the store and smoking. Who smokes in a furniture store?! I don't want to buy that antique Victorian couch from you now.

Thursday should be my first day to enjoy some down time with the family while Brett is on Spring Break and I am more than ready for a trip to the park barring any more thunderstorms. Tornado season, here we come!

xoxo,
Rachel

Red Velvet Art Update Today!

The Red Velvet Art Update will go live today! Here are a few sneak peeks of a selection of what I'm offering for the Spring Collection.

I'll be offering a limited amount of Vintage Rainbow Quilt Kits. Each kit will contain enough quilt squares for you to mix and match your own rainbow of floral and patterned prints. They each measure about 45" x 45" and come with batting, backing, binding, thread, and instructions for assembling your quilt. Easy enough for the beginner seamstress.

Most quilts feature a one of a kind vintage sheet backing. Patchwork squares shown are representative of the range of colors and prints included in each kit. This truly is the happiest range of colors I've ever worked with!
I've got a few chalkboards in the 10" x 12" size left that will go in this update.

I'll also be sharing these miniature bow clips made from vintage fabric that work for ladies or little girls. EDITED: Check Elsie's blog for the update announcement later today.

xoxo,

Rachel

Pretty Things From RVA

Probably my favorite scrapbook kit from RVA to date. I love the faux Polaroid journaling spots that you can write love notes on, the Fall color scheme, and the card holder pages! All of these elements make me want to do a little art journal mini album RIGHT NOW.

Elsie's also added some pretty crocheted headbands, vintage boyfriend glasses, and the first installment of her 100 paintings project. Read more about it on her blog.

This large painting has been one of my favorites ever since I saw it in her studio during the RVA retreat. It's BIG!

It's rainy and windy here today and the road is completely covered in orange leaves from the tree across the street. It's kind of beautiful!

Today I'm finishing up the afghan, drinking lots of tea to keep this sore throat happy, and staying in my 'soft pants' as long as I want. Our midwife came for her weekly visit yesterday and said everything looks good. Ruby is still in a good position, has a strong heart rate, and has moved down enough to give me some breathing room.

If she happens to be born on Halloween, we'll have two holiday babies. It would really set us up for trouble if we ever have a third. How sad would it be for both of your siblings to have fancy holiday birthdays when yours just fell on a regular old day. I told Brett we'd have to try and time that for a February birth because there are like ten holidays that month. Better chances, right? HA! Believe me, we're not really ready to talk baby #3 yet.

xoxo,
Rachel
