Monday Morning

Sebastian obviously doesn't understand the 'gain an extra hour of sleep' concept because he's been waking up at obscenely early hours these last two mornings. We kept him up an extra hour thinking that might buy us an hour in the morning like it used to but the boy is the perkiest thing I've ever seen at 5:45 a.m. I doubt even my mother would recognize me with these puffy eyes and bad hair. Thankfully, my lovely husband has taken the boy to get his coffee markout for the week so we can all be civil this morning.
My mom rejoiced a little when the ducks were taken to the duck farm to graze and poop wherever they like other than our backyard. They were starting to loose their down and get their white feathers so the term 'Ugly Duckling' may have been applicable soon. They were sweet and Sebastian loved to check on them and make sure they were staying in their box. He asked where they were when he woke up from his nap yesterday and we took him outside to show him that they had gone 'ByeBye'. He recovers quickly. Here's a little video we shot from a week ago. Its a little long but if you scroll to 1:15, you can watch as I gracefully chase down the ducks.
I've been making some craft tutorial videos for a friend's site that is launching in February and whipped up this scarf for one of them. I'll be posting the tutorial on the Red Velvet Blog later this week. I also did a fun 'point, shoot and hope for the best' self-portrait session. Thanks for reading! Oh, and my new banner includes the fabulous bag that Leigh Anne from Freckled Nest made for me. Check her out, she's got a lot going on over there!

iPhones and Quilt Pieces

Sebastian specifically asked to be an iPhone for Halloween this year so how could I resist making him the costume. Okay, so it wasn't Sebastian's idea, it was my mom's, but I like to think he was quite happy with the outcome. When I was young, my mom made costumes that represented something big that had happened in Pop Culture that year. (I was a Coca-Cola can the year they changed the name from just 'Coke'.) So her creative idea was well received.
Walking around with Sebastian in his oversized iPhone costume reminded me of that Halloween scene in E.T. He just kind of shuffled along carrying his Frankenstein candy bag until someone handed him something in a crinkly package. Sometimes he would sign 'Thank You'. It made this Momma proud.
There was an overlap in sewing projects last week so I had to leave my quilt pieces lying on the formal living room floor for a few days. Sebastian loves to walk on them so I took pics to make sure I could replace any rectangles that had been accidentally relocated. I've sewn each piece into rows and now am working on sewing the rows together. I should have a finished top by this afternoon if all goes according to plan and Sebastian sleeps as long as I expect. This one was commissioned by Jessica again as a birthday gift for her sister. I love that they'll have similar quilts to remind them of each other the rest of their lives. Lovely.

If you haven't checked out the Red Velvet Art blog lately, it should be your next stop. Sarah carved the cutest bird in her pumpkin and Silje is making me crave donuts! We're going to have a few fresh posts every week so make sure you bookmark our site and check back for fun inspiration for the holidays! Thanks for looking everyone.

Do you ever keep a list of things to blog about...

...And then forget it all by the time you sit down?
OK, well, its coming back to me in pieces so I can't promise anything stellar tonight. Here are a few fun pics from Date Night.

This little love bird is actually going to be an ornament once his ribbon is reattached. A few of these are going to Holly but I'm putting more in the shop sometime in the next few weeks. It feels like this love fabric is multiplying.

We had some fabulous video footage (or so I thought) of Sebastian chasing them around the backyard and finally picking one up but it didn't turn up on our camera. It'll just rest happily in my memory until about tomorrow afternoon. Anyone else have that problem? I think it has to do with mommy-hood but I'll count my blessings.

So, down to business. You've all heard about the fires in So Cal. I watched a woman named Christie Williams share her story on Wednesday morning on CBS and found her website and then her blog. Our lives are as different as anyone's but we share so many similarities. She was wearing the sweater I had worn the day before when I saw her on the news. She has young children, loves to sew, reads many of the craft blogs I frequent, etc. Her story is like so many thousands of others down south but hearing her story has provided a way for others to help. Her family has set up a website for those who are able to contribute. I've gone through my fabric stash and made up a 'things to make when you've got a place to put them' package to offer something to look foward to when life settles. Fabric is never an immediate need but it will help rebuild the stash that was taken. She shared on the news how she had recently finished the first sewing project with her oldest daughter and how devastated her daughter was knowing it had burned. I'm sure she would appreciate any words of encouragement on her blog if you've got some time.

I've also been tagged by the lovely Jen. So, 7 random facts and then watch out because its your turn!

1. I had the most emotionally up and down day today which probably means cramps tomorrow.
2. I haven't scrapped anything in about two weeks and really miss it.
3. I really dislike talking on the telephone. To anyone. Even my favorite friends. (working on that)
4. I need a haircut.
5. I slept on the living room floor last night with Sebastian because he was keeping Brett awake upstairs. We should've built a fort.
6. I finally have a day planner.
7. I am currently inspired by blurry photos.

Your turn! If you're the tagging kind of blogger, you're it!

Oh, and check out the RVKC blog. Celine's LO's are in and we've got a contest over on Flickr. I've been messing around with the background but I think its staying white. Sneak Peek coming soon. Oh, and if you haven't heard, we've got an exclusive BamPop stamp this month! No Kidding! Its a sweet little polaroid stamp and will be available soon!

Hollywood Pics

Driving down 99, one has very little to admire on either side of the road. When one has a new camera, one wants to take pictures of everything. So one does. Yes, I love my new glasses. For those who might be thinking they look awfully familiar, they are from Target and Elsie has the same pair. This was funny to both of us. It also came from the 'clothing category' in our 'Not Buying It' budget which does include purchases within our means and within relative need. My previous pair had been MIA for months so I was thankful to score such a cute pair at such a budget friendly store. Without further ado, onto more pictures.
This lovely photo is part of my new 18-wheeler series which was inspired by the lack of anything else to photograph while driving down 99. You can view the whole collection HERE. Scroll down. Keep scrolling. Apparently there are very few out there that share my fascination with truckers and their working world. You can tell by the outrageous lack of comments.
This is my dashing husband showing off his bi's and tri's. He's got tattoos! Actually this is the only stop we made on the way down 99, which is I-5 at this point, and decided to do the pit stop ritual before heading into the Grapevine. Sebastian played in the grass which was probably meant for dog relief but we were careful to stay away from the brown lumps.
This is someone picking up my son in his Baby Jogger. Wearing a Spiderman costume. Sebastian wasn't amused. Neither was I. Welcome to Hollywood.
They need no introduction. We were lucky enough to spend almost 24 hours in the same city. We found a photobooth. We talked about love. We browsed American Apparel. We made a video. We shared our lives.

Everyone Loves Presents

You must rush over to Lisa's blog and check out her handmade jewelry! Its beautiful. I've been a big fan of her hand-stamped necklaces since we did a trade earlier in the year. They are a perfect way to display kid's names for new moms and grandmas or to remind yourself of something every time you put it on. She's also been creating beautiful brass and antiqued sterling silver necklaces with vintage looking keys and hearts. They are stunning. She's got quite the gallery on the right side of her blog but also a ton of pics of new pieces in recent posts. Oh, and her family is just beautiful.
We just did a trade for Christmas gifts and these are a few of the fabulous pieces she custom made for me. I can't show them all because it would give the Christmas surprise away. This one is mine. It reads 'Bling'.

She does custom orders and is so wonderful to work with. Thanks again, Lisa! I'm a big fan.

We've got babies!

Part of my mom's third grade curriculum includes a unit on something that allows her to incubate duck eggs in her classroom. My third grade class was never so lucky. We only read Rechinka's Eggs. While being a fabulous story, it doesn't quite captivate a young mind like watching something squeaky pop out of its shell.

Sebastian and I went to visit the ducks during class today. I think he liked that they moved and made noises without him having to push a button first. He got to pet them but hasn't grasped the 'gentle' concept. I'll be tracking their growth over the next two weeks before they are sent off to the duck farm to live long and happy lives. I think they'll even come home and spend the night in a box in our garage soon.
The kids told me this duck's name but I can't remember. Something like Oscar. He's since hatched and has been accepted into the cool club.

This is Maple. She was the third to make it out.

These are the remains of Adam and Eve's eggs.

I can't tell them apart but the kids swear they know which is Adam and which is Eve.

My own little fuzzy duck.

Random facts that I'm sure you'll run out to tell your friends:
~Baby ducks poop every time their little bellies get in the water. I guess its a newborn thing.
~Ducks tilt their heads back to swallow.
~All you have to do is teach the first duck how to eat and the rest will catch on.
~Ducks are born with an 'egg tooth' that is attached to the top of their bill. They use it to peck their way out. It dries up and falls off within a week or two.
~One year my mom and I saved a little duck that had been in the incubator for too long and had become glued to the paper towel it was resting on. We got tooth brushes and scrubbed its neck free.
~Once you hold one, you'll get attached and start blogging about it.

Jack & Abby Layouts

The first one is growing on me but i'm super happy with the frames in the second pic. I think it took about 30 min. to put it together just because I had to search for pics that grouped well. Elsie took the two larger ones back in Oct. '06. I simply cut out coordinating papers for the picture backings and after attaching the pics, adhered them to the back of the chipboard frames. I added chipboard buttons and epoxy stickers for dimension and taped my ribbon onto the back. So simple. You should try it.
Making plans for a trip to Hollywood and Pasadena for next week to see Elsie, Emma and the Farquhars. I mentioned that Danielle is prego with their second awhile back. She's due around Thanksgiving so we're hoping to spend some time with them before they move back into the sleep deprivation stage of life! We're so excited for them. Danielle says Addison is a kicker.
I'll also get to meet Elsie & Emma's grandma for the first time. If its the same one I'm thinking of, I've stayed the weekend in her sah-weet cabin in the country. We all hosted an RVA art weekend a few years back. We did classes on altering your clothing, art journaling, painting, and topped it off with our own little fashion show.
On our first night there, we heard a knock on the door. We were really hesitant to answer since we weren't expecting anyone and we were out in the middle of nowhere. Finally, we all croweded around the door and opened it. There was a man in camo with dirt all over his face standing on the porch. He wanted to follow a deer that he had been tracking onto their property. I can't remember who did the talking but it was either Elsie or Emma who forcefully told him to shove off and not come back or we'd call the police. We spent the next 30 minutes recounting the scenario and then letting our imaginations create all kinds of scary endings. It was like telling ghost stories at a slumber party! HA!
Anyone have any scary stories to share?

Reconnect

Sebastian's favorite thing in the world is being outside. When we walk into the garage for any reason, he walks over to the swing and grabs one of the straps and points to the front yard while making the 'Please' sign. I am thankful for this. Its good to feel the sunshine on my neck now that the air is getting cool.

When we're not swinging, we're taking a walk. He's discovered a curiousity for things beyond our yard. He follows the concrete lines like an ant and knows how to avoid the dips of driveways. He'll pick up a rock, carry it down to the water line cover, drop it in and then wave goodbye.

My favorite things right now:
1. Coffee in the morning
2. Art journal pages
3. Flickr
4. Big clouds
5. Hat weather
6. Quilts!
7. Christmas plans
8. Pumpkin farms
9. Potato soup
10. Lunch dates with my dad

Whats on your Favorites list?

10/4/07

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10...

A few LO's I've done way ahead of schedule for the Love, Elsie DT. I couldn't resist playing with the Noel line.
I've never even looked twice at a Christmas collection because they feel really dated and restrictive. Or maybe just boring. This line takes traditional and throws it out the window. I know you all will love it just as much.

I made this mini with leftover chipboard from portfolios. I covered each page with the paper and then bound it all with the adhesive fabric paper. I used some of the chipboard frames as pages but left room for upcoming Christmas pics. This was one of those projects that merited staying up past midnight and then getting back to first thing the next morning after feeding the boy. It's trouble! Check out the new flickr feed on the right to see the whole thing.

I've managed to finally finish a few projects but the new ones just keep coming. I wrapped up the last journals to send to this lady. More on that later. I'm finalizing plans for the next few kits which are going to hold a surprise or two. Elsie is designing the Oct. Project Kit for RVKC! I've booked another queen size quilt commission which should be done by the end of the month. I've got some beautiful curtains to design and line for a very special girl. I've got a few small sewing projects to start on for friends. I've got leather to turn into more journals to sell on Etsy.

It's really a happy burden to be busy making things. I would rather be swamped with sewing and scrapping than anything else! It becomes a struggle to keep the rhythm and balance that creates a healthy lifestyle but I think you all can attest to that struggle no matter what your life is filled with.

Brett and I have taken on a few challenges together recently. The first is what he generously posted about yesterday. We're trying to practice the 'Not Buying It' lifestyle. Yes, we do have some 'trying to make it work in Seattle with a new baby and grad school and not a better job prospect in sight' debt but we are not just trying to save money. We are trying to learn to consume less. We'll share our story along the way.

The second challenge has been to take on some responsibility in adding more creative elements to our new church. We're using the enriching experiences we had here to aid in everyone's experience here. Really, we're just adding to the creative ideas coming out of Joe Green's head but we're excited either way.

Sebastian is learning new signs every week. His latest include 'car', 'Daddy', 'Mommy', 'Big Papi', and 'Uncle Joe'. He's learning to play hide and seek and loves to stick his little fingers into any open door that is about to close. My sister-in-law is moving to Haiti in a few days to help dig water wells and be of all kinds of assistance to others serving there. Emma is moving to Hollywood. I'll get to visit the RV sisters in a few weeks because of that!

Thanks for reading. I hope you catch some time amongst the busy burdens this week to make something pretty.

A Reflection

I feel so free.
Rachel mentioned the book "Not Buying It" by Judith Levine awhile back. It gave me permission to focus on financial health in ways I hadn't before. I was worried Rachel wouldn't react well to a major cut-back on spending to pay off our debt. But she said, "I'm OK with it. I was worried you wouldn't be!"
So, I tinkered with the budget and we are striving to save $3K and be debt-free by October 1, 2008. I won't keep on about it but to give these few reflections.
1. I found that externally cutting off spending has had a great internal effect.
2. I do not want what I cannot have. Since we are still (obviously) buying essentials I don't feel deprived. I needed a pair of shoes last week so I bought a pair. Just like that. That was a big deal for me.
3. Since I'm not focusing on the next CD I want to buy or the next movie I want to see I have found a special shine to posessions I was taking for granted. The KEXP Song of the Day podcast, the reading list I am involved with, the desire-free time spent with Sebastian and Rachel. This is a really good place to be.
4. Not focusing on the next material consumption has broadened my field of vision. I've started thinking about how to invest after October 1, '08. I've started thinking about our kids' college fund. I've starting thinking about early retirement. This is new and I am enjoying it.

There is lots more to consider here. It can be frustrating to constantly wrestle with money and its relationship with the gospel. Just so long as I keep questioning, I hope I can find some answers. If not... I'll just charge it.

-Brett
