How I Deal With Feeling Overwhelmed

This morning I woke up with a sore shoulder, the overwhelming feeling that Monday had already started without me, and that I would never find the time or resources to check off even the highest priorities on my 'GET ER DONE' list before this baby showed up. How did I combat my anxiety? I rearranged.

If analyzed, it probably has something to do with feeling the need to have control of a situation and creating a holiday vignette on top of my pink cabinet did that for me today. Plus, it was about time to add a little more pumpkin spice to the inside of our house. I simply gathered what I had stashed away in various closets and drawers and after a few different arrangements, settled on this one. I stepped away feeling like I had accomplished something that wasn't altogether useless and was then able to move on and face Monday. It's how I deal.

I was at Walgreens tonight (Monday) picking up some items for our home birth that I was supposed to have purchased two weeks ago and wondered if it was really obvious to other customers that I was buying all of this stuff because I was about to have a baby. I laid my Vaseline, super absorbent maxi pads, rubbing alcohol, peroxide, Q-tips, and a few other unmentionable items from the same aisle on the checkout counter and blurted out, "I'm getting ready for the baby," to which the male checker responded..."Oh, yeah?"... (awkward pause)...

He was generous to offer up his own awkward commentary on his head cold drainage rather than remain silent and let me feel like I'd just given away too much information. Now me and checkout guy at Walgreens are a little bit more aware of each others' personal information than we'd like to be. At least I got something checked off of the list.

xoxo,
Rachel

oh my goodness, i can't even begin to imagine how you must be feeling - but thank you for that post - it really made me giggle. (i don't mean that in a bad way and hope that doesn't come across as mean. i just wanted to let you know that seriously made my night.)

That's what keeps me sharing my awkward moments. :) We all need a good laugh when it comes to Mondays and maxi pads.

I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one afflicted with the this bug!

When I get stressed out I rearrange the furniture in the house, which at some point just adds to the stress, but I figure it's better then drugs, right?!

Love your blog!

I like the wreath/pink cabinet combo. :) So glad you were able to brighten Mr. Walgreens evening. He was probably just thrilled you weren't going to have the baby right that moment. :)

LOL! I aways do stuff like that too. Although it often goes the other way as well, people seeing my pregnant state and telling me EVERY detail about their births including fluids and blood........and other things.

I am in LOVE with that pink locker....sigh. I love your cute Halloween arrangement.

How are you feeling? I had a ton of BH contractions last night and am now realizing how close the end really is!.

OMG, that is too funny!!! The first time I was pregnant my little brother was in the Navy reserves and he was about to leave for 2 weeks, I told him he couldn't go because I might have my baby while he was gone. He said he would be back in plenty of time because my baby wasn't due for 4 more weeks. I told him I had already started dialating though and it probably wouldn't be 4 weeks. A few days later I pulled up to my parents house and my brother was standing on the front porch looking all mad and I asked him what was wrong and he said, "I know what dialating means, I asked Christy (his gf at the time) and you don't need to be telling me about that kind of stuff anymore!!!" LOL!!!! He was actually embarrassed, I loved it, lol!!!! He was about 21 at the time. I did end up having my baby while he was gone too. I guess that was way tmi too, lol!!! I just think it's funny embarrassing boys, lol!!! (even though I didn't mean to!!!)

i think there's just something humiliating about approaching a male cashier with chick-related items. the tendency is to either pretend neither of you know what he's scanning, or to blurt out something to cover for it. "hey! how bout that crazy weather, eh?"

good luck with your home birth. i had my first at home and i LOVED it. it's just so much more peaceful.

I remember feeling pretty weird buying stuff for my home birth. More specifically, I remember feeling pretty weird buying chux pads. The dudes at the store probably thought I was peeing the bed or something!

Best of luck! I don't know if you had a home birth for your first birth, but there is nothing better. :D

Tthe best was when Phil and I went to Walgreens to buy a pleasure pack of condoms. But we saw that Oreos were 2 for 4, so we grabbed those too. And I dashed out to wait for him in the car, while he faced the 70 year old lady at the check out counter. alone. heh

Oh happy! I just found your blog (again) after link upon link upon link.... the last time I read I was swollen pregnant with what became our ten pound baby boy, and you were blogging about the grief of losing a little one. And, after going through that a several times before myself, I couldn't bear the grief you felt without feeling guilt of my own pregnancy (how weird, I don't even know you!) But, links later and a year or so? And here you are, about to give birth, and (crazy!!) about to name your child what our baby boy would have been had he not been a boy! Fabulous! Many many hopes for the home birth you desire. So happy for you and your lovely family.

Rearranging ALWAYS helps me to get out of a rut and get my toosh into gear. It perplexes my husband, but there's just something about the feeling of new, isn't there?

I haven't said this before, but congratulations on your new little one on the way. Babies are so precious. I can hardly wait to have another one :O)
