Two weekends ago we took the kids to Shell Knob, Mo to a log cabin on Table Rock Lake for an overnight getaway. We originally wanted somewhere near water in the woods that wasn't too far away so we found Shell Knob and googled cabins. Green Cocoon came up and the screened in porch with a double bed sealed the deal. I'd always wanted to sleep outside on a porch.
We left town around noon and Brett surprised me with an alternate route that took us through Billings, one of the towns we saw on our way to pick up his Vespa, that has more flea markets on it's main street than it seems to know what to do with. He entertained Sebastian whenever Sebastian would find a truck to play with while Ruby and I walked the aisles of several shops. (If anyone is looking for a vintage metal doll house there are about three of them in Billings.)
We made it to the cabin around check in time and immediately got changed and walked down the hill to the lake where S and Brett took a little swim. Ruby and I watched from the dock and waved at people on boats. There was a huge rope swing hanging from the bridge that two boys were swinging from. It was overcast and warm and just about perfect.
Then it was dinner and a trip to the grocery store to get everything for S'mores. We introduced Sebastian to them but he was more interested in letting the marshmallows burn than eating them. The rain cooled things off and we slept like a babies on the screened in porch. It was perfect.
If you're in the area and looking for a summer getaway I'd suggest looking into this little place. It's run by a couple that live close by, was quite clean, and really charming. It's stocked with books, games, and magazines for an unplugged weekend and has a dock for lake access just down the hill. There were beautiful quilts in the linen closet that we piled on the beds and a big, open kitchen stocked with everything you need to cook all your meals. Just add food. The boys loved exploring and I'd go back any day just to sleep on the back porch again.
It feels like one of those places you want to go back to every year as your kids grow up. Did you have one of those places? Have you been back since then?
xoxo,
Rachel

It sounds like it was a wonderful family outing. That area of the country is really picturesque.
Sleeping in that sun room is what dreams are made of :) It looks so magical!
One time, I slept in a sleeping bag on a porch in the woods of Vermont during a thunderstorm. It was fascinating and scary all rolled into one. The trees would light up when the lightning struck. I spent a lot of time just laying there, staring out. Part of it marveling at nature's beauty, the rest praying I didn't see anything scary.
I'm completely smitten and it's totally doable! I feel a girls weeken coming on.
Sounds like an amazing trip. Your littles look so ahppy and snug is that chair.
Smmmm orrreeess. Hmmmm. My son also likes burning marshmallows more than eating them, good thing for him, the only way I eat marshmallows is over a campfire, nice and black on the outside, smoochy yummyness on the inside.
Thanks for sharing such nice moments.
We do have one of those places! My family take an annual trip to a place called Karri Valley in the South-West of Western Australia, every July. It's about a 4 hour drive from home. It's the most beautiful, peaceful place ever - I couldn't miss the annual Karri Valley trip for anything! We've made friends with the long-term staff over the years, and now my new-ish husband is a part of the tradition too... sigh! Only a couple months to go...!
your american cabins are always so beautiful! i wish we had something like that in england. or maybe we do and I haven't found it yet?
How much are the rates for one night? We LOVE cabin camping! This reminds me of my MeeMaw's house.
Wow, looks dreamy!
That sounds so wonderful right now. Unplugged and cozy with the family : )
Oh just adorable...what a great little break away..and you two little cherubs are just so super cute..and love those velvet wing chairs..they look super comfy :) x
What a great place! We try to make a trip to the smokies every year and always try to stay right in the middle of the mountains. It's beautiful and relaxing. Looks like you had a great time!

that looks so dreamy. there seem to be so many great places like this in the us. why don't we have some of them over here in germany? i'm kind of jealous :)!
OH how wonderful! Yardsales to wander through, a cabin on the lake and a wonderful sleep in a screened in porch. Something you read about and rarely get to experience! Lucky you! You have to go back again and again as the kids get older so they will remember!
This looks like it was a lot of fun!
Ashley Ann,
Hey lady! There were two queen size beds inside and the full bed outside and plenty of room for a blow up mattress or pack n play in the enclosed bedroom. I think the price includes 4 people with $20 extra per person and a $20 boat fee if you want to use the dock for launching.
Your boys would LOVE it. Just don't bother at the flea markets in Shell Knob. Not much to write home about.
That looks like the perfect little getaway! I'm in California, so I won't be staying there, but it definitely makes me want to do something similar! I LOVE the bed on the porch!
oh i want to be in that cabin!
Yes! In Michigan...and we go back in just 3 days - I can't hardly wait!!
When I was growing up my parents rented a place where they got to sleep on the porch and we slept inside...I remember being jealous because it looked oh-so fun!
It looks amazing :)
what a beautiful cabin! that front porch is so sweet! i'm thinking of taking a road trip this summer to chicago to see my family & maybe explore the rest of the midwest; perhaps i'll do an overnight stop in billings?
i am so jealous! that place looks dreamy...
that sounds like the perfect little getaway. the cabin looks so cozy! sleeping on a screened porch sounds amazing!
Ariel Cupcakes,
Yes, then you can drive through Springfield (which has the best flea markets all in one place) on your way!
Looks like heaven! I just got back from a weekend getaway to the country myself. On a 120 acre organic farm! Such bliss! So important to get away from it all
