We bought a blender last month to make our own baby food from organic fruit from the farmer's market. While I still haven't made the first batch, we've been keeping it busy with fruit smoothies for ourselves! They are one of Brett's favorite things to whip up for us and other than maybe one failed experiment, they are all delicious and super healthy. Here's the jist of our favorite so you can make your own after you're done reading this post because you'll be craving one pretty badly. My apologies in advance if you're stuck without a way to the store and all you have in your fridge are eggs and some cream cheese.
Brett's Berry Tasty Smoothie Recipe
(the name is original, the recipe is probably not)
1 carton of raspberries
1 carton of blueberries
1/2 carton of strawberries
2 bananas
2 cups vanilla yogurt
1 cup frozen chocolate chips
1 dollop of honey
Ice to the top of the blender
(30 grams of protein powder optional)
(1 Tablespoon wheat germ optional)
serves four

Talk about antioxidants, right! Use local honey for help with allergies and any other supplements that you can sneak in to make you feel good. The frozen chocolate chips pair well with the berry taste and are a nice little surprise. NO IDEA about calories, protein, etc. but it's definitely a treat you can feel good about.

here is my version:
- frozen fruit (wash, cut fruit and place of cookie sheet, put in freezer for a few hours)
- single serving of yogurt
- about a cup of OJ
- a bit of honey
add to blender. blend until smooth. delicious!
i am excited to try your version with the choc chips!
I like to use freeze the fruit (so I don't have to use ice... I never remember to make ice) and I blend it with cold tea, usually green tea. The kind of fruit doesn't matter so much, as I try to use whatever is in season or whatever I happen to have on hand. Last summer I had so many blackberries because we found a great place to pick them, so that was a pretty popular ingredient. I also like to add ground flax seeds for a little extra fibre.
umm, yum! I love raspberries. I'm doing green smoothies all summer. Just remembered I saw an email from you earlier! nighty-night!
Feeling brave, girl? My friend Megan swears by this one:

I LOVE avocados, but I haven't had the guts to try this, yet :) Let me know if you do. PS, I think you'd be interested in some of her recipes, look around her site a bit!
Aura,
I sent the recipe to Brett because I LOVE avacadoes so I'm extra eager to try this one. Checked out her blog, too. And now I'm hungry.
We make a smoothie every day for lunch so the ingredients vary (we mess around and try to make different colors)...but typically it's bananas, some frozen fruit, an orange if have, Vitamineral Green, coconut oil, kale or frozen spinach...and purified water. YUM!!!
I love smoothies, and drink one almost every day. If you add spinach to your smoothie it will turn green, but you won't be able to taste it with all the berries, it just adds lots of vitamins and minerals :). May seem weird, but it's a great way to get your greens. My favorite is banana, frozen mango chunks, spinach, and apple juice.
i love to add a little bit of oj in our smoothies. it adds great flavor. i cant make a smoothie without it now!
:)
ooh, my favorite treat smoothie..not so much healthy is a mixture of milk, frozen stawberries, and then throw in a 1/4 package of cheesecake jello mixture (just the little package)..it sounds strange, but it is SO good.:)i love the frozen choc. chips too..so yummy.
that sounds delicious!! i often make joel and i smoothies for breakfast with frozen blueberries, frozen peaches, frozen strawberries, a banana, pomegranate/blueberry juice and soy milk. it's so yummy and it makes a great start to the day! i really want to make one with chocolate chips now!
Aah, I love smoothies. When I was in high school I used to make them at least 3 times a day but I haven't made myself one in years...I guess it's probably in large part due to our lack of a blender - we need to get one asap!
frozen pineapple, vanilla protein powder, pecans, water, & ice....yum!
I do many different versions but recently it's been one with SOFT TOFU, a bit of soy milk, frozen or fresh fruit (the fruit choice depends on what's on hand). I like to add some wheat germ or flax seeds too sometimes.
To make a green fruit smoothy I add Spirulina - it's an algae that's super nutritious and it blends well with fruit and it still tastes great.
My favourite combo that I haven't done this year yet is CHERRY AND CHOCOLATE CHIP ;) Gosh all these smoothy thoughts are making me crave one ;)
sounds delish! i try and drink a smoothie every morning! mmm! im new to your blog. its just lovely!
mmmm. a smoothie with chocolate chips! i have to try it.
smoothies smoothies smoothies...
love love love!
oh yes please! i'm totally making brett's berry tastey smoothies for the fam this weekend!
xo.
yum!!!! sounds delicious!
this year i have been shoving my blender full of spinach and blending it with my liquid first before adding my fruit and plain yogurt. it is a great way to get my greens in since i am SO not a veggie girl!
yummy yum
Fav Smoothie:
Frozen Mango, Strawberry, Pineapple chunks, OJ, banana, blueberries.
YUM!
(I recently learned from Nigella that you can cut up banana, freeze on cookie sheet and bag for smoothies later and they don't turn brown!)
Sounds delicious, thanks for sharing!
A few weeks ago I was rocking a banana oatmeal smoothie for breakfast: One banana, 1/2 c yogurt, 1/2 cup milk, 1/4 cup of oatmeal, dollop of honey and a healthy pinch of cinnamon. The texture of the oatmeal is a little something to get used to...but it's very delicious!
Yum yum yum. Our blender has already been getting a hardy workout this summer keeping my husband and I supplied with smoothies almost nightly!
i love using mango and raspberry in my smoothies. we just went strawberry picking and froze a TON of strawberries to use for our smoothie habits. makes it so much cheaper in the long run!
